Saint Peter and the Vatican Grottoes

Vatican Museums

The Sistine Chapel

The Vatican Grottoes extend beneath the central nave of St. Peter's Basilica three meters below the current floor, from the main altar to about halfway down the nave; they form a true underground church that occupies the space between the current floor of the basilica and that of the ancient Constantinian church of the 4th century

The Vatican Museums are the national museum of the Vatican. Founded by Pope Julius II in the 16th century, they occupy much of the vast Belvedere Courtyard and are one of the largest art collections in the world. The Sistine Chapel and the papal apartments frescoed by Michelangelo and Raphael are among the works that visitors can admire along their route.

The vault of the Sistine Chapel contains a very famous cycle of frescoes by Michelangelo Buonarroti, created between 1508 and 1512 and considered one of the absolute and most important masterpieces of Western art.

Lavinium Civic Archaeological Museum

American war cemetery in Nettuno

The American cemetery and memorial in Nettuno for those fallen in war was established as a temporary cemetery two days after the Allied landing at Anzio and Nettuno. Since 1956, it has become permanent. 7,862 soldiers from various battles rest here.

A suggestive place of great historical interest that allows people to reflect on the terrifying cruelty of wars.

The memorial is easily reachable in 10 minutes by car.

The Archaeological Museum, established in 2005, is located in a building situated in Pratica di Mare, near the Medieval Village that occupies the acropolis of the ancient center of Lavinium, the sacred city of the Latins. In the various sections of the museum, artifacts dating from the 10th century BC to the Roman era are on display, including the statue of Minerva Tritonia, large votive terracotta statues, and the grave goods from the protohistoric necropolis, coming from tombs dated between the 10th and 7th centuries BC. The last room is dedicated to Aeneas, the Trojan hero. It can be reached in 10 minutes by car.

In Sperlonga, in one of the most scenic spots on the Lazio coast, Emperor Tiberius built his villa. It was a huge villa. The natural cave at the edge of the beach became an integral part of the imperial residence and hosted, and still hosts, a spectacular pool, valuable statues, and alcoves. The Villa of Tiberius stretched for 300 meters in length and included barracks for the troops with stables, residences for the entire court, a thermal bath complex, the decorated cave, and the fish ponds in front of the cavern. It can be reached in 1 hour by car.

The fortress of Ardea

The myth has developed various versions about the events of the founding of the city of Ardea, linked to the story of Aeneas landing on the coast of Latium and thus to the birth of Rome. The territory of Ardea was already frequented in the Paleolithic and tombs from the Copper Age, dating back to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC, have been found. In the Iron Age there was a settlement of three villages of huts in the areas of Civitavecchia, Acropolis, and Casalazzara. Evidence includes traces of post holes from the huts and a necropolis, with infant pit graves and a tomb of a princess from the 8th century BC with a rich grave goods.
Only 5 minutes by car!

Castel Gandolfo and the Roman Castles

Lake Albano or Lake Castel Gandolfo, is a volcanic lake 168 meters deep and on its shores there are important prehistoric and Roman archaeological remains.
The entire area of the Castelli Romani can be reached in 40 minutes by car.

With the name Castelli Romani the entire geographical area located southeast of the city of Rome is indicated. The name dates back to the 14th century when many inhabitants of Rome, to escape the economic and political difficulties resulting from the Avignon Papacy, took refuge in the castles of the Roman feudal families.

Circeo National Park

San Felice Circeo is one of the most popular destinations on the Pontine coast. Clean beaches and crystal-clear waters are its strong points, attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world every year. Located within the Circeo National Park, it is a natural oasis where scenic beauty reigns supreme. It is also a very popular destination for those who love snorkeling, surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing, as the area is very windy and allows for the practice of these water sports. It can be reached in 1 hour by car.

Ischia and the Gulf of Naples

archaeological park of Pompeii

Vesuvius

The island of Ischia is the largest of the Phlegraean Islands and an important destination for international tourism. Famous for its thermal waters and its mild climate all year round. The thermal springs flow near the Maronti beach, located in the south. To the east, on the seabed of Cartaromana beach, there are Roman ruins. The beach faces the medieval Aragonese Castle, connected to Ischia by a stone bridge. Ischia is located in the Gulf of Naples and can be reached in 2 hours by car plus 1 hour by ferry.

The archaeological excavations of Pompeii have revealed the remains of the ancient city buried under a layer of ash and lapilli during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79. One of the best testimonies of Roman life], as well as the best-preserved city of that era. Both Pompeii and Vesuvius can be reached in two and a half hours by car.

Vesuvius is located in a dominant position over the Gulf of Naples. It is one of the two active, or rather dormant, volcanoes of continental Europe and also one of the most studied and dangerous in the world due to the high population of the surrounding areas and its explosive characteristics. The Vesuvius area in fact has a high population density and the number of residents potentially at risk is around 700,000
